One of the most important lessons that all nonprofit social media managers need to learn is that social media is constantly in flux. Once you get accustomed to a tool, it changes in an attempt to reinvent itself. Rather than lamenting this new reality, a good social media manager will adapt quickly. That said, Facebook has made some recent upgrades – and more are coming – that nonprofits need to know about.
Last Friday, my short 9 month career working on Common Ground came to an end. I'm free (sorta) and sad (sorta) and angry (not sorta). Don't get me wrong. Jobs come and go, especially in this economy. Startups fail. Companies cut back. It happens. My disappointment, sadness and anger is over the way too early death of a product that I believed in.

I love the new Salesforce Visual Workflow. I can’t code a line of Apex but with Flows, I can automate processes in ways that just warm the heart of my inner wannabe geek. As hard as Salesforce is trying to make Flows approachable, it still comes across as scary to many admins, especially those working at small nonprofits. On August 1, Google quietly launched Google Wallet for the Web – and the technology has the possibility of transforming online and mobile fundraising as we’ know it. Described simply, donors can sign up for a Google Wallet account , enter and save their credit card information, and then donate to any nonprofit (or purchase from any online store) that has a Google Wallet merchant account with only two clicks of a mouse (or two taps on a tablet).
We’re an Apple family, since way before it was cool. Right now, I have a 2.5 year old iMac that is still going strong, iPad 3 and iPhone 4S. Husband has an iPad 3 and iPhone 5. Teenager #1 has an iPad 3 and uses a hand-me-down iMac for writing/school work. Teenager #2 has her dad’s hand-me-down iPhone 4 and my hand-me-down 2009 MacBook. I see many families like ours.

I used to try everything just for the sake of checking it out. Now, with soooo many tools, apps and startups out there I’m more cautious. I’m tired of apps and technologies that sure, solve a problem, but in order to do it you have to completely change the way you think or work. It sucks that app A doesn’t do (whatever) but that’s usually not reason enough for me to start over with something else.
