Yesterday the news was that Blackbaud had laid off 50 employees it acquired when it bought Convio in May. In what was said to be an unrelated development, they also announced the departure of Gene Austin, the former CEO of Convio. Today the news is that Blackbaud is killing off Common Ground , one of the two donor management products (aka CRMs or Constituent Relationship Management systems) that they acquired from Convio.

According to the Run Walk Ride fundraising council “The top thirty “thon” event fundraising programs generated $1.69 billion in gross revenue for charity last year, up $40.8 million or 2.46% from 2010 levels.”. That’s right, $1.69 billion raised in 2011 (with an expected growth of 10% in 2012). And that’s only the top 30. There are thousands of smaller nonprofits who run peer-to-peer fundraising events.

I've been working closely with Kevin Lynch, the CEO of the Social Enterprise Alliance, on countering the efforts of Salesforce.com to attempt to trademark the name of our entire field, Social Enterprise. This one's scary since I'm an eFax user. But I was suspicious that it was asking me to click on a link (pointing to a server in Germany) rather than open an attachment. There were lots of warnings in 2010 about fake eFax messages delivering malware. I don't know what this one does and don't intend to find out. Here's what they look like. A few years ago, Cause Marketing was all the rage. Nonprofits – small and large – were scurrying to create “meaningful” corporate partnerships NOT sponsorships. Some did it well ( Pink Ribbon anyone?? ) while others struggled. No one disagrees that proving a company’s Social Responsiblity is very important to consumers. In fact, in a 2011 report, consumers spoke very loudly that they expect companies to drive social and environmental change and that they will reward these efforts.

On vacation… in remote areas in a distant land… viewing wildlife (hopefully)… and 100% offline. No smartphone. No tablet. No work. Just a camera, a couple of good books, and a journal, a pen, and a glue stick.

Your website has a lot to say. If a person from each department of your organization stood in front of you and shouted information, chances are you wouldn’t decipher anything through the noise. At the very least, you would be confused. If you don’t prioritize your content to convert the noise into clear messages, your users will experience the same confusion.
