Each Friday through the end of 2012 I am going to donate $10 to one of my Favorite Nonprofits in the hopes of inspiring others to donate more often. It’s true what Walt Whitman said… giving does inspire more giving. If you are a nonprofit, please help me get the word out about #FundraisingFriday to your supporters. Hopefully you’ll be able to convert a few fans, followers, and friends into donors.
We recently released the most comprehensive analysis of online giving trends in the nonprofit sector. Ok, ok … that sounds a little bit like bragging, but I promise the report is worth the read. In our 2011 Online Giving Report we’ve combined findings from The Blackbaud Index of Online Giving with additional multi-year giving data, which allows us to pull out a very rich set of insights.
This post is cross-published from NTEN. Read the post and join the conversation on the NTEN blog. —– Normally, I stay away from assumptions: We all know the saying about what assuming does to you and me! When it comes to managing or building communities, online or on the ground, the work can seem overwhelming and sometimes even never-ending.

Google, I think I’m over you. Nonprofit Salesforce Practitioners (NPSF) is a 6 year-old Google Group now with over 1700 members, averaging around 300 messages a month. I’ve been co-moderator of the group since 2009. Only requirement for membership is that you have a connection in some way to nonprofits using Salesforce. User, administrator, vendor, consultant.

With each passing day your supporters, donors, activists and sponsors are becoming overwhelmed by the barrage of tweets, status updates, text messages, and emails being thrown at them on a daily basis. As a result, text-based “Thank You” messages are often unread and overlooked. That said, a video can often communicate your appreciation better than the written word and the eight videos below will help inspire your nonprofit to create a “Thank You” video.
Content Marketing takes lethal generosity if you want to succeed. If you’re a nonprofit thinking about content marketing then put the “ Lethal Generosity ” concept into your plans. This idea really is the key to your nonprofits online engagement and marketing strategy. Whats lethal generosity? Simply put, lethal generosity = giving away content that’s useful to your audience in order to build trust, respect and goodwill.
Today is World Water Day! While there are many, many organizations working on water-related issues all around the world, there’s one I want to highlight: Water for People. We know that you can’t resolve issues in your own community or another one with quick fix solutions; as social changemakers and nonprofits, we look for the sustainable opportunities for shifting systems for a better outcome and a better world.
Guest Beneblog by Vijaya Tripathi The first ever Martus users group meeting took place earlier this month in Chiang Mai, the capital of Northern Thailand. Martus is Benetech's free and open source software package designed for human rights activists to collect stories and data about human rights abuses. For me personally, the meeting was a rare experience.
Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. Mistakes can lead to costly penalties and operational disruptions, making it essential to adopt advanced solutions that ensure accuracy and efficiency.
As I said, I am done. Blogging, that is. But I’m a writer, and the writer in me decided that “Zen and the Art of Nonprofit Technology” is going to be a book. I’ll leave you just with that little tidbit. In April (after my lenten social media fast ), and after I relaunch my personal site (I’m moving all of the tech stuff there, and this URL will have stuff for the book,) I’ll fill everyone in with a lot more details.
Most nonprofits have not yet upgraded to the new Facebook Timeline for Pages design, but as more and more admins begin to realize that the Timeline design and tool set is much more than just uploading a photo to the top of your page, I think we’ll see many of our favorite nonprofits take the leap and upgrade before the mandatory roll out of Facebook Timeline to all pages on March 30.
Yesterday we talked about the importance of content marketing for nonprofits. Hopefully you caught it. If not, go check it out. We’ll wait here for you to come back. It’s a fairly simple idea. Create content that attracts the audience you’re targeting with the goal of getting them to interact with you. Simple in theory, but actually very challenging to execute on.

Yesterday was the 2012 New York Cares Leadership Conference , and I had the distinct pleasure of presenting a session to volunteer leaders and inspiring community members. The session focused on using core social media platforms Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to raise awareness and inspire others as a volunteer. For many organizations, we provide guidance or goals for using social channels to our staff, but this session was for the volunteers who want to make a difference from outside of the or

I have a confession. One of my fears when I left Fight Colorectal Cancer to join Convio is that I would lose my hands-on experience in Salesforce. That I would get too much distance from the day-to-day of actually using Salesforce/Common Ground at an organization. Crazy. Truth is, every day I’m faced with a new and interesting challenge to solve.

I read a blog post by Joe Pulizzi the other day. It got me thinking about how content is used by nonprofits to help them connect with the right audience online. In essence, Joe points out the fact that great content is the tool that moves hearts and inspire action online. The concept of creating content to engage with your audience isn’t new, especially in the nonprofit world, but it is becoming more and more critical when it comes to creating success online.
Last week I was down in Austin, TX, for the 2012 South by Southwest Interactive Festival. Even though the majority of the attendees representing big brands, companies, and start-ups, the nonprofit technology contingency still had a strong showing with many socially good focused sessions on the agenda, the Beacon Lounge, and plenty of extracurricular events.
Gather a group of social entrepreneurs to brainstorm ideas to improve employment opportunities for people with disabilities, and you will harvest an array of innovative solutions. Share these ideas during a vibrant conversation with the number one champion in the Senate for people with disabilities, and you can count on a disability rights advocate who is prepared to mobilize support and resources to promote policies that will create an employment environment in which these cool innovations rema

Across the nonprofit sector, organizations invest heavily in donor retention efforts, yet the struggle of cultivating lasting relationships remains. While attracting new donors is crucial, the lack of repeat donors poses significant financial risks. Through a comprehensive analysis of industry data, experts argue that there is a direct correlation between donor burnout, donor retention, and the talent retention crisis.
Note From Beth: Nonprofits are beginning to unveil their new timeline designs (I’ve been post examples on my Facebook Page and curating them in pinterest ) In the Friending the Finish Line peer learning group I’ve been working with, participants are sharing their creativity, including this cover design from Utah Children created by staff person Barbara Munoz.
Many of you have probably already heard that Facebook Timeline for Pages will automatically go live for all brand pages on March 30. As admins, you can currently “ Preview Your Page “ to enable the new design in advance of the mandatory rollout. Many nonprofits are postponing upgrading their pages because the Default Landing Tab option is disabled in the new design, but I personally have never been much of a believer that Default Landing Tabs have resulted in high numbers of e-newsl
Most nonprofits need to raise money to survive. It’s a day-to-day fact of life. And because fundraising continues to shift from offline to online nonprofits are faced with a growing need to find new and innovative ways to do fundraising through online sources. The move towards a multichannel fundraising approach (online and offline) is becoming more and more critical to long-term success.
Effectively managing cloud technology is getting more complex. From cybersecurity concerns, vendor lock-in, cost increases, or lack of transparency on costs, it can quickly get out of control. Knowing what you can control and finding a platform that’s built with nonprofits in mind is key.
