And when the idea of a peer-to-peer ebook library came to me, it was George who I went to with the idea. After talking me out of calling it Bookster, he explained how the DAISY format would be ideal for our new Bookshare project, that he had made sure that it would work well for ebooks like the ones we were hoping to provide.

Of course, just as we're solving the text problem, more and more content is moving to richer, more visual forms like graphics, simulations and flash!

Thanks to incredible work on the part of socially responsible publishers, our volunteers and the Bookshare team, we've been adding books at at incredible rate: more than 10,000 books in the last month. They also operate Web Braille, an online Braille ebook service with roughly ten thousand titles.

Our team has been explaining how to assist a disabled senior who doesn't have a PC, by empowering a PC-using child to download the book and load it onto a device like a Victor Stream (an ebook player that has a voice synthesizer that speaks our books).

You can take an ebook, push a button and make it Braille. This results in an ebook, which can be shared by Bookshare legally with many thousands of other disabled readers.

We think that all publishers should sell accessible ebooks when they sell their books through mainstream channels, but the copyright exception leaves that decision to the publishers except for this narrow community of people who are significantly disabled when it comes to print. through the Association of American Publishers (AAP).

A great (bad) example is Adobe, one of the leading ebook technology vendors, who just introduced their Digital Editions. Do we want people with disabilities, volunteers or teachers losing their internet access without due process because they were handling copyrighted materials in ways that are permitted today in the U.S.?

Without the rights the Chafee Amendment grants to Bookshare and our volunteers and partners, our work would be substantially curtailed and the materials made accessible to people with print disabilities would be significantly restricted. The Section 121 exception is a major and indispensable safety net for accessibility.
