Many of them have never been fundraisers and lack the basic understanding and expertise in dealing with a nonprofit’s most important donors. Being bold means you have to “sell” the ROI of the CEO’s time in philanthropy relationship building, the CEO’s critical value with larger donors, and respectfully push for more access to a CEO.

Even though fundraisers love unrestricted gifts, many donors tend to prefer giving to specific programs or campaigns. When a donor writes a check or sends back a direct mail slip, it’s easy for them to write in where they’d like their gift to go. Need to fill a gap in an upcoming event? Need new toner for the copy machine?

Jeff Kutash, the executive director of the Peter Kiewit Foundation in Omaha, Neb, deals with grants on a daily basis. In that sense, the relationship between foundation and nonprofit is very similar to the relationship that is strived for between nonprofits and individual donors. Grant writing is a time-consuming process.

The broadband company, CenturyLink , is also building a gigabit fiber network in Omaha, so this is definitely a growing trend. Founding donors to the fund include Google Fiber , the Illig Family Foundation, Sprint , Global Prairie , Polsinelli Law , and J.E. Google plans to roll it out in Austin, Texas, and Provo, Utah as well.
