A portable device with some compromises I recently surveyed a bunch of students about the most important aspects of a high school or college laptop. Because at $649 list price (it’s about $673 on Amazon at time of press), the question isn’t “Does this laptop knock your socks off?” percent screen-to-body ratio. The Swift 3 is 2.65
If you’re now working at home, if your kids are now learning at home, if you’re just stuck at home and looking for a good computing experience, you may be in the market for a new laptop. What follows are reviews of a variety of laptops that you might want to consider for the use of yourself and your family. (It Windows 10 laptops.
I’m picky about touchpads, but this one is quite roomy, with a smooth Gorilla Glass surface — I’d choose it over plenty of touchpads I’ve used on multi-thousand dollar Windows laptops. But the Spin 513 has a quite nice 1920 x 1080 screen, which is as good of a resolution as you’ll ever see on any laptop at this price.
Samsung’s Galaxy Chromebook, Asus’ Chromebook Flip C436, and many of last year’s top contenders like the Pixelbook Go all used a 16:9 aspect ratio — a more square 3:2 screen is taller and gives you significantly more vertical space. Two big factors set Acer’s Chromebook Spin 713 apart from the rest. The first is its 3:2 display.
A massive laptop you probably don’t need Seventeen! This laptop has a 17-inch screen. It’s very unusual to see a 17-inch laptop under four pounds — let alone under three. For that niche, though, this laptop tracks. For that niche, though, this laptop tracks. A laptop so light usually comes with major caveats. (I
inches, it’s a typical size for a tablet, but if you’re trying to use it the way you’d use a work laptop (with dozens of tabs and Windows side by side, for example) things get cramped. The display does have a 16:10 aspect ratio, which I appreciate — and if you’re used to using 16:9 panels, you’ll notice the extra vertical space.
But not every game plays nicely with the 21:9 aspect ratio. If you’re purely gaming, you may not need to make any adjustments to the color profile, but the out-of-the-box contrast and brightness settings were not suitable for simpler use cases, like using productivity apps — namely Gmail, Slack, or Google Docs.
It has a whopping 25:9 aspect ratio, meaning it is very, very narrow. Lots of the games I would stream from Microsoft’s Game Pass Ultimate or Google Stadia were designed to be played on laptop or TV screens, so having the Z Fold 2’s tablet-sized screen made them a lot more usable than a smaller phone. inch display.
inch screen is cramped for a desktop OS like Chrome OS (though it is bright enough to use outdoors, and I appreciate that it has a 16:10 aspect ratio — 16:9 would be unbearable for me at this size). The songs I played had stronger percussion than I sometimes hear from laptop speakers, but it was thin and tinny overall. Oh look, a port!
It does have the cramped 16:9 aspect ratio, something I’ve been glad to see other ThinkPads shifting away from this year. There’s a Google H1 security chip inside, which works like the TPM chips that you’ll often find in Windows business laptops. But all kinds of Windows laptops at this price point leave this battery life in the dust.
But if you’re looking for a tablet to replace your laptop or get serious work done, the Fire HD 10 is not it. The bigger software problem remains: Amazon does not have access to the Google Play Store and is therefore lacking many of the apps you are familiar with on a phone (think Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Docs, etc).
You might be tempted to get a Chromebook as your next laptop and we wouldnt blame you. The market is saturated with machines at different price points and power levels; Ive been testing and reviewing Chromebooks for years and know what you should be looking for, and what you can expect out of these laptops.
