December 12, 2007 I had a good look at NTEN’s CRM Satisfaction Survey (yippee for data!), They included CiviCRM , SugarCRM , and vTiger (which is actually a modification of SugarCRM), all with vibrant developer and user ecosystems. There were 6 open source (or sort of open source) tools that showed up on this survey.

Rule of thumb: projects that haven’t had minor releases in a year or more are definitely in danger of becoming projects that are no longer under development. Look at ohloh.net – they have great info on most projects – how many developers, lines of code, how active development activity is.
