I have previously written about the top issues addressed by the Treaty , but to recap, the Treaty is a wonderful instrument because it requires exceptions for people who are blind or have other print disabilities in national copyright laws. It gave us the opportunity to conduct for the first time a sizeable outreach campaign in education, provided us with informative user feedback and case studies, and supported the development of Bookshare’s initial K-12 collection. The Lavelle Fund also supports programs benefiting the developing world.

First, it makes creating a national domestic copyright exception an obligation of countries that ratify the Treaty. Plus, it will especially help countries with less-developed libraries and services for people with disabilities by making it easier to tap large collections (like Bookshare) in other countries. Articles 5 and 6.

As the operators of Bookshare in the USA, which was made possible through a great exception in our copyright law here, we would love to make all of our books available to people with qualifying disabilities around the world. We expect that many of the big issues with the current text will get ironed out this week. For what am I advocating?

The nexus for this work is the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the United Nations agency that deals with such matters. law works: the one that made Bookshare possible.
