Most of my work contracts involve a conversation that goes something like this: "We want to find ways to make our institution more participatory and lively." Audience development is not an exercise in concentric circles. It requires trading a certain history for an uncertain future--a nerve-wracking prospect no matter the situation.

Visitor Co-Created Museum Experiences This session was a dream for me, one that brought together instigators of three participatory exhibit projects: MN150 (Kate Roberts), Click! So far, most participatory museum design projects are heavily guided by the institution. MN150 will have formal summative evaulation, which is wonderful.

I used the example of two very different exhibitions that solicited visitor-contributed content: Playing with Science at the London Science Museum, and MN150 at the Minnesota History Center. The Minnesota History Center team solicited visitor nominations for exhibition topics and then built an exhibition out of those contributions.

This month brings three examples of museums hosting meetups for online communities: On 8.6.08, the Computer History Museum (Silicon Valley, CA) hosted a Yelp! But these events have benefits both in terms of audience development and word-of-mouth marketing. Consider the experience of the Computer History Museum and their Yelp!

The themes science, environmental, nutrition, economic development, children, youth, parenting, and leadership are very much appropriate as this conference agenda from the NACDEP and ACE/NETC shows. Extension programs use wikis, flickr, blogs, tagging, and other tools to share information and content. So, now is the fun part.

Rabinowitz commented that "as a 40-year veteran of history museum interpretation, I can say that I never learned so much from and about visitors." Unfortunately, most talk back walls don't support the grouping of visitor contributions or attempt to encourage conversational threads to develop. A lone "What do you think?"

MN150 is a newish permanent exhibition (opened in Oct 2007) at the Minnesota History Center that marks the sesquicentennial of Minnesota with 150 of “the most influential forces in the state’s history.” As an exhibit developer I don’t get to engage directly with visitors that often. Do you think he’s worth nominating? ”
