While there, I was lucky to get to experience a highly participatory exhibition that the MIA mounts once a decade: Foot in the Door. The design constraint is simple to understand, specific enough to be interesting, and doesn't prescribe the output. The exhibition design suggests both democracy and intimacy.

Once that group shifted to talking about project ideas and ways the museum could connect to this constituency, they were in a whole different mindset, and the suggestions they made reflected how we can meet community needs, not just market to a particular audience. I can't say that any one experience--working on a collage with other visitors, swinging on a hammock, discovering a participatory display for pocket artifacts in the bathroom--directly contributed to increased attendance and giving.
