We’re against piracy, and have made commitments to authors and publishers to encourage compliance with copyright law. Benetech is one of the largest developers of software for human rights activists around the world. Wonderful stuff.

On August 1, 2013, I testified before the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet on the subject “ Innovation in America: The Role of Technology.” We don’t create solutions from scratch: our innovation is adapting existing raw technology to meet the needs of the users in the social sector.

This is an academic conference on access technology, full of researchers trying out new things that will help people with disabilities. I just got back from a terrific week in Austria at the International Conference on Computers Helping People with Special Needs conference. And that's just two examples.

Background Information Benetech is Silicon Valley’s deliberately nonprofit technology company. We’ve already made a huge difference in the area of software for students with disabilities and for human rights and environmental organizations. Students do not have to be blind to qualify under the copyright exception.

The third movement is the effort to make copyright exceptions a global norm , thus enabling easy import and export of accessible materials. They don’t like being told that the ebooks they purchase can only be read on certain devices or in certain software programs. thanks to our domestic copyright exception.
