Lots of people have already weighed in on Blackbaud’s purchase of Convio (two of my favorites: [link] and [link] ). Idealware’s Consumer’s Guide to Low Cost Donor Management Systems reviewed 30 systems, the majority of which don’t come from Convio or Blackbaud. Here my perspective. I’m more concerned about the top end of the market.
It’s been a little over a month since I signed on the dotted line for Common Ground , Convio’s Force.com application for nonprofit donation and constituent management. Between them and Convio, I feel like we’re in good hands. Last week, Convio updated their managed packages to version 2.0. for donations.
There are only 3 conferences I make a point of going to each year if I can: Convio Summit , Salesforce Dreamforce and NTEN NTC. Wouldn’t you know that this year, Convio Summit and Dreamforce were the same week? Not to say that the Convio conference isn’t excellent. Originally, I was only going to go to Dreamforce.

Yesterday the news was that Blackbaud had laid off 50 employees it acquired when it bought Convio in May. In what was said to be an unrelated development, they also announced the departure of Gene Austin, the former CEO of Convio. The Blackbaud/Convio staff I spoke with seemed taken aback by this decision.
If I knew that I could make the switch from the old Salesforce nonprofit Starter Pack to Convio Common Ground in less than 6 weeks, I would have made this move months ago. Tags: Geek Posts Salesforce Common Ground Convio database. Yes, it was time consuming, but not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be.
It's been a little over a year since I fully deployed Convio Common Ground at the Colorectal Cancer Coalition. Afterwards, thanks to new upgrades from Salesforce aimed at developers like Convio, there was minimal configuration. Which brings me to the next great thing about Convio Common Ground: support. Still no regrets.
I just got back from 3 fabulous days in Baltimore at the Convio Summit user conference. This year, there were enough nonprofit organizations already on Common Ground to warrant a session or two aimed at users, rather than just to sell existing Convio clients to the application as was found at previous Summits.
Every dollar of your gift will be matched by Convio , up to $10,000. Tags: fundraising community conference 09ntc nptech events convio. Give to the Scholarship Fund. You've probably heard by now that Blackbaud has announced it intends to acquire Convio in a roughly $240 million deal. The biggest impact will be felt by Convio clients and the partner vendors and consultants in the Convio ecosystem – and there's lots of speculation about that already. That's the interesting story here.
The nonprofit community was stunned yesterday when Blackbaud purchased long time rival Convio. According to Blackbaud President Marc Chardon, “Combining Convio and Blackbaud is expected to help create one of the largest SaaS vendors with over $440 million in trailing twelve months pro forma revenue.”
The graphic, provided by Convio , compares the growth of online giving between the years of 2008 to 2010, these numbers have only grown over the past 3 years and are continuing to increase. It’s likely going to be another long one, so for those of you who just want it short and bittersweet, here it is: I will be leaving Fight Colorectal Cancer at the end of this year to join Convio’s Common Ground team. Why Convio? In the end, accepting an offer from Convio was the best and most logical choice for me.
The buzz in our biz is that you have made enormous strides over the years in the areas that count – client service, product usability, and bringing the promises of the salesforce and the realities of customerhood into an acceptable equlibirium. Vinay continues to be a major thought leader in fundraising, and an inspiring colleague.

Earlier this fall, Convio released its " Peer-to-Peer Event Fundraising Benchmark Study ," based on a look at 48 organizations using Convio's TeamRaiser to manage fundraising events. You can find the complete study online here. They recently released an infographic to illustrate some of the key benchmarks.
When I accepted the job at Convio, I negotiated that it would be okay for me to blog. Convio respected and understood the ecosystem it was a part of. Which leads me to the second factor that made Common Ground special… Midsize nonprofit business expertise: Convio knows about fundraising online. I know I'll be fine.
Kudos to Vinay Bhagat of Convio for winning the 2012 Care2 Impact Prize for his outstanding impact in online advocacy and fundraising. O'Brien praised Bhagat for founding the influential and successful software platform, Convio, which helped more than 1600 nonprofits to raise $1.3 billion in 2011 alone.

The idea is that nonprofit professionals will be able to use the book chapter-by-chapter to implement best practices in Web 1.0, and Web 3.0. The tools, resources, and nonprofit service providers covered in the book thus far are: Blackbaud. Dictionary.com. Ez Publish. Network Solutions. Squarespace. Thesaurus.com. Wild Apricot. WordPress.com.
Nonprofits that are currently using Common Ground Enterprise, Luminate, and Convio Online Marketing are also nervous. Luminate was the top contender for one of my clients, but they’re strongly considering eliminating Blackbaud from further consideration. I doubt they’re the only ones. That discussion continued on my blog.
OpenIssue will continue with its strong team focused entirely on CRM and data (using Salesforce, Convio Common Ground, etc.). I have decided to step out of co-running OpenIssue , a business that I helped start more than 2 years ago, so that I can work part-time, to get (and stay) healthy.
Two of them (Convio and Blackbaud) are even publicly traded companies, which says a lot about the profit potential of this vertical. The sheer number of vendors providing this toolset for nonprofits is huge (although rapidly shrinking.)
Have you ever wondered who else works at Convio? As a staffer working out of our DC office, I decided to relocate to Texas for a month and spend some time working from Convio's Austin offices (eating breakfast tacos, getting to know my colleagues and such). Author: Emily Goodstein. Howdy, Connection Cafe readers!
Over the past several months I've had the pleasure of working with Convio's Engineering team on a number of new features for Luminate Online. The tech jargon (sorry, I tried): with the Winter release, Convio's Open API will support the Access-Control-Allow-Origin response header. Author: Noah Cooper. And proud of it. Oh, memories.

On January 17th, the nonprofit, technology, and financial communities learned that Blackbaud was beginning the steps to acquire Convio , whose board had approved the purchase. I am very curious how nonprofits are managing their websites these days: Are you using a content management system offered by companies such as Convio , Blackbaud or eTapestry ? Although social media gets much of the buzz these days, websites are still central to your nonprofit’s online communications strategy.
The sixth annual Convio Online Marketing Benchmark Index Study is now officially released. Author: Vinay Bhagat. At a macro-level, we continue to see online engagement growing at a healthy rate. In fact, over the past five or six years, online fundraising has grown at a similar rate to retail e-commerce, good news for nonprofits.
Dust off your Tom’s, iPads, and lanyards- SXSW is finally upon us and no one is more excited than we are here at Convio. Author: Guest Blogger. It’s that time of the year again folks! Have no fear if you are new though, they provide a nice beginner’s guide and mobile app for those who are feeling overwhelmed.
Whether I decided to install the Salesforce Foundation’s Nonprofit Starter Pack , Convio Common Ground or something in between (or nothing at all), I would have some concessions to make. After weighing all the options, and with a little help from some friends , we’ve decided to purchase Convio’s Common Ground.

Convio released their own Fall ‘09 upgrade of Common Ground (to version 2.1). While I was still trying to figure out what we were going to do before switching to Convio Common Ground, I asked staff for their Salesforce wish list: “what do you wish our database could do that it doesn’t already?&# So what’s new?
Back in September, as I posted that I was leaving Fight Colorectal Cancer to join Convio , I had a picture in my head of what my new job would be like. Convio has put all its attention into the kitchen and bathrooms and added a heavily customized bedroom or two on to the garage. I love my job. Folks can live quite comfortably that way.
Convio released their 2010 Online Nonprofit Benchmark Study in March, based on results from nearly 500 clients. As Convio found, average gift size declined. I t's the season for a slew of reports analyzing last year's online giving results. Its findings included: 14% growth in online giving overall.
I was there with Convio, now a public company listed on NASDAQ (before anyone asks, no I do not own any Convio stock and have no plans to make any purchases.my I was honored to be one of 5 or so client representatives Convio invited to join executive staff, long time employees and their families for the ceremony. Very touristy.
Proprietary CMS as part of a large package (such as from Convio or Blackbaud). On the proprietary side, there are a number of options, and they fall into three categories: Single-source proprietary custom CMS (from one web shop, or web host). Proprietary stand-alone CMS (such as Sharepoint.).
One of my fears when I left Fight Colorectal Cancer to join Convio is that I would lose my hands-on experience in Salesforce. Tagged: Common Ground , Convio , CRM , Salesforce. I have a confession. That I would get too much distance from the day-to-day of actually using Salesforce/Common Ground at an organization.
Donations were matched by Convio and with over $10,000 raised by the community, we had fun at the largest-attended NTC yet! NTEN is hoping to raise $10,000 from the nonprofit technology community again this year, and Convio is going to match those dollars to help get as many folks to #10NTC in Atlanta this April 8-10.
