This is not only cool from the perspective of the integration of two great opensource web apps, but it also is a very interesting business model. Matt Asay, blogger of all things in opensource biz models, thinks Google Code may have overtaken Sourceforge. Setup of all three has a one time fee. Be Helpful.

September 17, 2007 There is an interesting discussion happening between Holly Ross, soon to be ED of NTEN, and Allan Benamer , about web statistics, and whether or not nonprofits should be “transparent&# and publish their web statistics. And, he thinks that NTEN should be responsive to him, as a member, in asking to publish web stats.
Their theory is that anything they build has to be built opensource, so that the taxpayers can access and use any innovations. Since transparency is only one leg of the stool, San Francisco also sponsored an app development contest to get people involved in using the data for the public good. Good things will follow.
On the Windows side the hardware manufacturers make proprietary drivers for Windows, and very few make drivers for Linux, or opensource their drivers so that Linux developers can use them. And, of course, designers need software that just don’t have high enough quality opensource alternatives yet. 8 Pete 06.25.08

Ushahidi is an opensource platform that facilitates crowdsourcing through the use of SMS/cellphones and online mapping. Crowd voting has been used in Cause Marketing. There has been an explosion of “Vote for Me&# contests that have become contests in techniques for vote getting and inspired cause fatigue at worst.

It is based on some opensource code called Pligg that creates a "digg" like interface. The nptech tag stream (plus other sources) has been imported, so you can comment and vote on tagged items. Someone on the 501 Tech Club NY list ( NTEN Affinity Group ) suggested a name change might be needed.

We have the NPTech Meta Tag Feed (which aggregates about dozen feeds of NpTech tagged items and I'm still using for various reasons); Kikono.org (which uses an NpTech feed and digg like features) and now we have the two pipes from NTEN - the NTC pipe and the NpTech Pipe.
