Note from Beth: There has been a variety of criticism of contests. Nonprofit consultant Hildy Gottlieb has been a vocal skeptic and is deeply philosophically opposed to online contests as a method of change in the social sector. Earlier this month, I sent out a few tweets asking for the counterpoint to Hildy's view.
An art festival where local artists can show off their pieces, explain their work to attendees, and donate a portion or all of the proceeds to your nonprofit. If you have a good relationship with a local vineyard, coffee roaster, or brewery, you might even propose a special vintage, roast, or brew just for your nonprofit or event.
Maybe a local florist is willing to donate flower arrangements for each table at your gala or a marketing or PR firm will provide pro-bono services to help promote the event. Include the sponsor’s name in certain event activities, such as a “Hole-in-One Contest Presented by Sponsor” or “Sponsor Photo Booth.” Donated services.
