When organizations face an unprecedented event and are in dire need of support, making an emergency fundraising appeal is a direct way to emphasize that need and raise money quickly. With this partnership, both parties received a lot of positive media attention which even led to more support in money and supplies. But you have options!

But donating money to a charity, even a small amount (or in-kind items ) can certainly help with part of the need and raise awareness in others. For my 50th birthday, I held a 50th Birthday Card Photo Remix Contest on flickr and donated $50 the winner's favorite charity. And, yes they did !
