We engaged in chat rooms and consumed content selected by AOL or Prodigy or Yahoo. We sent emails and IMs.

On Monday, I gave the keynote at the Museums in Conversation conference in Tarrytown, NY. I learned to cultivate creative greed while working on Operation Spy at the International Spy Museum, where I was lucky to be working on a project that was so new to us that we didn't have any pre-established models or structures for doing it.

I think about how hesitant I was to become an artist, because I didn't see role models, and even to this day how hard it is for me sometimes to find peers who are women of color, because of how systematically they are pushed out. I ended up going to college, trying to be an architect, because, again, I was one of those honor-roll students.
