My theory of practice is different than my consulting philosophy. The client is quite knowledgeable about their organization, mission, and goals for a project, but often not knowledgeable about technology. I think, actually, all technology consultants, whether they do what I do, or hack code, should do this exercise.

NTEN has retained Heller Search Associates to recruit our next CEO. As you know, NTEN's objective is to help nonprofits maximize the use of technology to fulfill their missions. Provide energetic leadership and strategic direction to NTEN staff and consultants to develop and deliver ambitious and high-impact programs.
NTEN is trying to get a handle on all of this, and find out what people use, and how much they like what they use. It’s such an interesting space, and there are some really intriguing things happening with software in that space. I can’t wait to get my grubby little fingers on the data on CiviCRM and Salesforce.
The first one is one that I’ve been using recently for my consulting business – SugarCRM. It also gets kudos from NTEN’s satisfaction survey (it came in third, after CiviCRM and Salesforce.) So for the next few tools, I’ll be describing CRMs (Constituent/Contact/Community/Customer Relationship Management).

Nonprofits face unique challenges that commercial enterprises often don't face: you have no IT staff, no IT budget, uneven levels of technical skills in staff, high turnover and volunteer staff, distributed teams with only the internet connecting them, no long term IT planning or vision, and project based funding models.
As the grand finale to NTEN’s first-ever Leading Change Summit , a number of intrepid 14LCS attendees pitched and developed 24 awe-inspiring projects during the Idea Accelerator. The Summit may have ended, but many of these projects are only beginning. What does this project need? What’s next for this project?
I want to give huge props to Holly and all of the NTEN crew for putting on a fabulous conference. And, as a member of the NTEN board, I’m really proud of what’s been accomplished. Based on my informal assessment of attitudes and interest in the NTEN community about open source software, I think there's a significant and growing number of folks and organizations who are either interested in, already using, or even evangelizing open source solutions. Open source projects are now prominent players in middle layer.
On Thursday, April 9th at 8:00 am, we kicked off the tenth Annual Day of Service at NTEN's NTC which was a resounding success! I remember a hot consulting topic was how to get your database off those 3x5 cards into an excel spreadsheet or how to mail merge in Outlook to send out an e-newsletter. .
On September 6 in San Francisco, over 200 attendees at NTEN’s Leading Change Summit (14LCS) convened for its finale event: the Idea Accelerator. Head Start, and Kristen Thompson, Center for Reproductive Rights, this project aims to create a platform that will identify harmful phrases and words in order to avoid perpetuating harm onto others.
