Note from Beth: There has been a variety of criticism of contests. Nonprofit consultant Hildy Gottlieb has been a vocal skeptic and is deeply philosophically opposed to online contests as a method of change in the social sector. Earlier this month, I sent out a few tweets asking for the counterpoint to Hildy's view.

Here’s a hint: They want to know the inside scoop on what it takes to save bears or tutor kids or help homeless veterans. Engagement through thank-yous, polls, contests, or highlighting a volunteer or project. It’s a GREAT place to share volunteer opportunities and open houses, and even recruit staff or find consultants.
Photo Contest. For example, a nonprofit whose mission is to provide food and supplies for the homeless might create a registry with nonperishable foods, shower products, vitamins, and other useful products. Or, offer an all-day auction, contests, and other activities for them to get involved and help you raise funds. .
I don’t think we want homeless shelters, food pantries, mental health organizations, etc., Secondly, I certainly saw that over the five years I was the IT Director at the Coalition for the Homeless that our clients were increasingly interested in initiating and maintaining electronic communications with our case workers.
