People don't need empowerment to make a difference; they need vehicles for action. is profiled as a hero, is it reasonable to provide visitors ways to follow his example by protesting war and multi-national corporations?

Erickson founded FORGE (Facilitating Opportunities for Refugee Growth and Empowerment) in 2003 when she was a 20 year-old junior studying public policy at Stanford University. FORGE serves 60,000 refugees in three different refugee camps in Southern Africa, and is an official operating partner of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR ).

That said, in 2012 I had the opportunity to travel to Africa and Asia and from those travel experiences three themes emerged that inspired the selection of this year’s nonprofits: 1) Women’s and girls empowerment; 2) Conservation of wildlife and wild lands; and 3) Access to medical care. Increasingly, rape of women is being used as a tool of war, not just in large scale wars as we saw in the Serbian and Bosnian conflict, but as we saw recently in Kenya and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I think my comment in The Nation was really more about that. I think that is what really motivates me to do this work.
