Tomorrow morning, I’ll be leaving on a jet plane, to Atlanta, Georgia, for the 2010 Nonprofit Technology Conference. This will be my 7th NTC since 2001 (or, more accurately, my 5th. I went to two Circuit Rider Roundups.). I’m looking forward to it.

I was disappointed when it was announced that the NTEN NTC would be in San Francisco this year. The NTC is the nonprofit technology conference. Less focus on consultants and high-budget solutions. If the conference were on the east coast, I could get there by cheaper means. They’re offering NTC scholarships!

This year the Nonprofit Technology Conference turns 10! I have a number of colleagues who I have been seeing almost every year at the NTC for the past decade. This year we have over 100 volunteers to install a wireless network or work with local nonprofits on strategy consults. There's the NTEN member reception at noon.

This year's NTC brought 1,430 nonprofit professionals to the OMNI Hotel in Atlanta GA. Unlike in past years, we had a large number of late registrants: 18% of attendees registered in the month prior to the conference. Together with our exhibitors, they committed $344,900.00 to the NTC, just under 50% of our total income.

The NTC is an event largely attended by Americans (and our gentle neighbors to the North). We're still not sure what the right way forward is - more straight up service projects, back to the one on one consults? What we WILL do is make this an issue we can discuss as a community when NTC planning picks up this summer.
For the past five years, I've coordinated the NTEN/NTC Day of Service and before that participated as a volunteer. Volunteers had the option to do a strategy consult and stay at the hotel or leave the building and go on-site. I think it might help to do some more vetting for the strategy consults and match the pairs in advance.
