I used to work at The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, CA. The problem was not one of content but one of form. The solution is in focusing on changing form more than content. They are making canonical content relevant by updating the form. The content needn't. Sometimes, that content may be of-the-moment.

At least the content-focused social networks, like del.icio.us, or flickr, or my personal favorite, our own Social Source Commons , there is some there there. They own my profile, and whatever time I spend adding content.
