My theory of practice is different than my consulting philosophy. 2 comments… read them below or add one } 1 Michele Martin 07.11.08 I think, actually, all technology consultants, whether they do what I do, or hack code, should do this exercise. They certainly are consistent with each other, but they are distinct.
I think part of the answer has to be to provide the resources for people to become better providers – whether it be to help budding accidental techies get off the ground to become great IT staff or independent consultants, or helping individual and small consulting firms learn what makes really good nonprofit support.
Even today, it’s not an easy task to find investors who are willing to take a chance on socially responsible ventures that prioritize social good over profitability. And so, my very first for-profit angel introduced me to my first nonprofit angel! Sheldon’s quick-shot reaction was, “you need to meet my friend, Robert.”
Although he writes about the technology field as a whole, and seems very tapped into the for-profit world, he has lots of words of wisdom I think we can learn from. Most of the 10 are applicable to nonprofit organizations (I’d skip the “Offshore work&# tip.) The one I love the best: Procrastinate.

(Photo by rob_pym ) I’m hosting this week’s Carnival of Nonprofit Consultants ! There weren’t many takers on this one, but there are some real troopers out there in the nonprofit consultant blogosphere, so there’s some great stuff to talk about. Sorry it’s a day late.
Most are completely silent, but when we reached AmpMe for comment, we got a reply from its support email address. Through the years, like most startups, we’ve hired outside consultants to help us with marketing and app store optimization. Maybe it’s angry its consultants faked these reviews.
But what’s really important to me, is that there are A WHOLE HECK OF A LOT of conversations here: there are around 500 posts and over 6,700 comments ! Well, first of all, I’d love to hear what is most useful or valuable to you, why you keep reading and commenting, what you wish there was more of (or less of!)

It’s still mighty small (still around 2%), but Linux Desktop market share grew from 40-60% (depending on who you ask) from last year. Adobe (yeah, Adobe ) joined the Linux Foundation , and released a Linux alpha of Air , their new application platform. {
I expect that this will enhance the appeal of LinkedIn for nonprofit executives, staff, and consultants for our own networking needs. It all sounds like LinkedIn wants to pull all of those people who have been migrating to Facebook back into their fold, with the idea that LinkedIn is serious about business. It’s an interesting strategy.

It’s not just consulting work, but other varied happenings in my life as well. I’ve been re-reading a book that I read early in the decision-making process about becoming a consultant way back in 1996. It’s called The Consultant’s Calling , and it’s really a book about consulting as a calling, a vocation.
