Aurora, the startup founded by former lead engineer for Google’s self-driving project Chris Urmson, is bringing its fleet of test vehicles to Texas. It’s the latest company to shift resources to the Lone Star State, which has quickly become a hotbed of autonomous vehicle testing. The company also has had some setbacks.
Starting now and lasting until the end of the year, Waymo and UPS will collaborate on freight hauling between facilities in Dallas-FortWorth and Houston. In addition to Waymo, UPS has conducted tests using self-driving trucks designed by a startup called TuSimple.

Starting this week, Aurora Driver-powered trucks will haul loads for Werner Enterprises, a transportation and logistics company, between FortWorth and El Paso, Texas. Aurora said it is also opening up three new terminals in FortWorth, El Paso and Houston to support multiple commercial lanes.
The two companies will work collaboratively on a pilot project to evaluate the use of Waymo’s autonomous technology to move freight. The test will take place in Texas, with Waymo’s Class 8 autonomous truck hauling goods along Interstate 45 between facilities in Houston and FortWorth for one of JB Hunt’s customers.
