Traditionally, nonprofit governance has been perceived through a hierarchical lens, with board members primarily overseeing and guiding the organization’s direction while staff execute the operational tasks. My experience with Candid reinforced the notion that the best work gets done when the board and staff collaborate closely.

These trends are a direct result of the “redlining” of communities of color for generations, which prevented investment dollars from improving those communities and encouraging homeownership. Many of these cities are tackling the issue of housing and homeownership to create a more equitable economy in their communities.

Isolation taught us the value of the relationships and the technology that sustained our communities. Civic and government partners played pivotal roles in their ability to provide that support. The goals were to talk about the great things that restaurants do in their communities. I am still evaluating the lessons learned.
