According the CNN Heroes site, they received nearly 4,000 submissions from 75 countries that were narrowed down to 10 candidates by a Blue Ribbon Panel. I've included part of the nominees' profiles below, as they are written up on the site, but added links to their organizations and projects where I could find them.

Rapidly Rehousing: A Nonprofit’s Use of Modular Homes When Cyclone Gombe devastated Malawi, it left many families displaced without housing. Unable to rebuild, she and her children lived in unstable conditions with relatives. Nostos’ steel-frame, insulated-panel homes are made off-site then transported and assembled on location.
