The correlation found in Haiti is an example of a "confounding factor". Children's reading skill is strongly correlated with their shoe size -- because older kids have bigger feet and tend to read better. You wouldn't measure all the shoes in a classroom to evaluate the kids' reading ability.

These seven children are receiving a quality education, three meals a day, mentoring, and medical care. In Haiti, a typical adult has just five years of schooling, and the literacy rate is just 53 percent.

Library For All co-founder and CEO Rebecca McDonald was living in Australia when tragedy struck Haiti in 2010. A massive earthquake caused chaos in Haiti and killed over 100,000 people. Although McDonald had never been to Haiti, she had recurring dreams about the country. Let’s backtrack to when it all started.
