In an effort to raise awareness for child abuse, thousands of Facebook users changed their profile photos to one of their favorite childhood cartoon characters (full disclosure: mine was Underdog.) Whether it started on accident, was part of a specific campaign, or originated in Greece , this meme seemed to really have legs!

Things which seemed universal to me as a boy were in fact very culturally specific to my childhood in southern England and wouldn’t have had any resonance even twenty miles across the English channel in France where their Noël celebrations differ widely. I didn’t realize as a child how traditions vary across the Christian world.
