David Barnard has completed six of these grueling races: The Kalahari Desert in Botswana and South Africa (its name is derived from a Tswana word meaning "the great thirst"). He runs these ultramarathons to raise money and generate awareness for charitable causes. There is no prize money. There is no prize money.

He was able to get some work digging pit latrines to put himself through one semester of his remaining high school education, and then he ran out of money. He did his degree in NGO Management, and will be graduating this coming June. The first opportunity that I had to go back was to work in a refugee camp in Botswana.
