Katie” was one of the first girls I ever met, a 12-year-old who loved ballet, soulful music, and chocolate chip cookies. She has created a coloring book for children born with cleft lips and palates.

More so than teens in the past, teens today have grown up in a culture of fear around engagement with strangers. They like to do and touch and make.

They launched an annual fundraiser and gift-collecting drive for the children's hospital in their community (in WA). It was a huge success and it's now become an international drive , with toys and books going to children's hospitals all over. Free Books for Kids!

The recent flurry of restrictions that has sent teens fleeing? I think it's a good thing that librarything gives me a way to talk to strangers about books that feels safer than approaching the drooling guy at the public library. Children's museums are the exception; staff are on the watch for unaccompanied adults and kids alike.
