In 2009 , students built a participatory exhibit from scratch. Thirteen students produced three projects that layered participatory activities onto an exhibition of artwork from the permanent collection of the Henry Art Gallery. When activities were not facilitated, people were often too timid to interact.

It is multi-disciplinary, incorporates diverse voices from our community, and provides interactive and participatory opportunities for visitor involvement. This post focuses on one aspect of the exhibition: its participatory and interactive elements. So many museum exhibitions relegate the participatory bits in at the end.

Connectivity helps facilitate highly distributed groups of people to work on a campaign, project, or share ideas that spread with unprecedented velocity and reach. How do you blend? It is closed, inaccessible, and leader-driven. It downloads and it captures.

This exhibition represents a few big shifts for us: We used a more participatory design process. Our previous big exhibition, All You Need is Love, was highly participatory for visitors but minimally participatory in the development process. We're involving visitor services and volunteers more intentionally in facilitation.

Roberto Bedoya : The "Yes And" Argument and its Civic Implications Bedoya, the Executive Director of the Tucson Pima Arts Council, makes a beautiful statement that arts administrators need to facilitate a multiplicity of leading voices, or as he puts it, "the courage of imagination and the plural."

Facilitated/Unfacilitated Blend When we started this course, I really pushed the students to think about ways to induce unfacilitated interactions among strangers. I love facilitated experiences, but I worry that they aren't scalable to every visitor. Tags: evaluation exhibition design participatory museum usercontent.

We need to set up spaces in which doing the right thing--welcoming all kinds of people--is easy, facilitated and enforced. Nina's research keeps finding that the right kind of constraints work to produce a better participatory museum experience. We want to be platforms for building relationships around a central core.
