Sharing your stories makes people want to get involved and help. We’ve had a couple clients over the years who both received a large grant from the State of Tennessee. Fundraising events can be a good way to raise money, raise awareness, make new friends, and deepen relationships. Limited support.

We also run after school programs, where we have curriculum that is based on teaching youth –mostly elementary and middle school aged kids – about community service and civics and cultural awareness. Well, as I am answering these questions, I’m getting bounced around by some nasty turbulence somewhere over Tennessee!
The idea was that visitors would come up and hang out on the front porch, listening to the elders' stories of the past. They had stories to tell and were happy to talk, but the social barriers to participation were too great to make it happen. No one approached the volunteers. And there's another reason I don't want to criticize it.
I grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and both sets of my grandparents came from rural Mississippi. It's just a matter of people becoming more aware of them, supporting these spaces and helping them to proliferate so there will be more. What was the inspiration for the cookbook? Did you just wake up one day and say, "I want to do this!"
