October 15th was Blog Action Day , a day for bloggers, podcasters and vloggers to write about and raise awareness about an issue. Here are a few examples of some month-long and two-week long online events: Maw Books Blog ran a Blogging and Reading for Darfur campaign last month. The theme for this year was poverty.

He began the talk by telling the story of the first time Google Earth was used for awareness raising by Rebecca Moore, Program Manager, Google Earth Outreach. Steve talked about how Google Earth can make the world a smaller place and add faces and places to statistics, like the USHMM's Crisis in Darfur layer does (pictured above).

This shows the viral potential of raising awareness in the social networks. Tim says MySpace is not good for fundraising, although we have seen some examples of orgs running successful fundraising campaigns, such as Dollars for Darfur. But 36% discovered them through a friend’s profile.

But wanted to capture some quick thoughts related to a couple of recent awareness raising activities taking place in Second Life or recently launched. What is ironic is that the WDM has not learned to apply what they presumably have learned from their other campaigns into virtual space. It's been crazy busy last week and this week too.
