In 2000, our founding patron Nelson Mandela stood on stage at the inaugural Laureus World Sports Awards and declared: “Sport has the power to change the world.” Being in that room was one of the most impactful moments of my life, and I remember thinking about the important role sport played for me and its incredible potential.

She has been the recipient of many awards, including Fast Company's 2007 Social Capitalist Award, and the League of Women Voters' Women Who Could Be President Award. I remember a very wonderful woman from Sierra Leone, Sarandabba, saying to me, "You know in a war, women are raped, but Mother Earth is also raped.
