The new Nest Audio sits between the Nest Mini and Home Max in price, size, and output. Despite that lower price, the Nest Audio is an improvement over the Google Home in nearly every way. Similarly, Sonos is now in the smart speaker game , bringing its rock-solid wireless streaming and class-leading audio quality to the table.

Google has finally refreshed its midrange smart speaker with the impressively good Nest Audio. price as last year’s 3rd Gen Echo , the Nest Audio, and the HomePod mini. And sure enough, the Echo is physically deeper than the Nest Audio, which is a little bit taller. And Amazon, naturally, is not standing still.
And aside from a few tweaks Sony made to how it upscales music, the 1000XM4s sound just like their predecessors — a very good thing, trust me. I’ve made a few voice memo recordings and had some calls with the 1000XM4s, and while the mics won’t give you pristine audio, your voice is reproduced clearly and intelligibly.
It was a unique device — instead of prioritizing an accessible price and smart assistant features, it was laser-focused on audio quality and considerably more expensive than its closest competitors from Amazon and Google, while being less capable as a smart speaker. As a result, the HomePod didn’t really take off. HomePod mini sound quality.
It’s trying to convince them why they shouldn’t instead get their audio fix from a different, more versatile kind of speaker system for a similar (or smaller) amount of money. The leftmost button can toggle to a secondary audio source. This lets them work with my PC, as well as my record player, or a TV if I had an audio receiver.
The audio quality has been further refined, and Sony added key features it frustratingly omitted last time — like IPX4 water and sweat resistance. The 1000XM4s also raise the bar for wireless audio and battery life in noise-canceling earbuds. Sony told me that when it tunes earbuds, it closely looks at current music trends.
So you can take a call or have audio from any app come through from a phone, tablet, or a PC mixed in with the sound coming from your Xbox console. In addition to how the headset looks, its functionality is similar to the Surface Headphones, with twistable dials on the outside of each ear cup for adjusting elements of the audio.
Bose’s sporty shades offer good sound, a steady fit, and total awareness It’s still fair to call audio sunglasses a niche category, but with Bose offering several models, Amazon in the game , and counting recent announcements from Razer and JLab , it’s certainly a growing one. Describing the sound quality of audio sunglasses can be tricky.
The buttons are mushy, which I can understand since that means they don’t click loudly as you’re listening to music. The music control buttons can be a little cumbersome. They support aptX HD, aptX, AAC, and SBC Bluetooth codecs, so they’re well-rounded for wireless audio. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge.
Almost a great gaming gadget The $199 GTW 270 Hybrid earbuds from audio company EPOS are, to my knowledge, the first truly wireless earbuds made for gaming — but the buds themselves aren’t the biggest selling point. However, there is one problem: the microphones don’t work when you’re listening to audio via the USB-C receiver.
You’ll quickly get a sense of how you should orient the HyperBoom in your room once you start hearing music. And no matter how loud you like to play your music, it sounds clear and balanced with plenty of bass, mids, and highs. Additionally, it has a 3.5mm input and a digital optical audio port, letting you connect another two devices.
The app plays about 10 seconds of ringtone-esque orchestral music, then displays a “good seal” or “bad seal” result for each earbud. There is also an audio test called HearID that claims to map your personal hearing sensitivity at multiple frequencies to best tailor the EQ settings for you. Photo Illustration by Alex Castro | Photography by Spotify. The company wants to be at the center of creator monetization Spotify hosted an event on Monday to discuss its ambitions in audio, and one message came through loud and clear: the company wants to play a major role in helping creators make money. That just wasn’t the case.
Good sound quality and best-in-class noise cancellation come in an awkwardly big case Bose’s original true wireless earbuds, the SoundSport Free, sounded fantastic but were foiled by connectivity problems and audio / video sync issues that the company never fully resolved. Music also automatically pauses when an earbud is removed.).
These moves show that as Apple continues putting a greater emphasis on audio products — with the new HomePod mini and long-rumored premium headphones expected to launch soon — Beats is realizing it needs to stand independently from Apple’s ecosystem if the brand wants to continue its enormous success.
The new regular AirPods get a lot right even before the gimmicky spatial audio part For the first time since their introduction in 2016, Apple’s AirPods have a completely new design. In the right ways, they still sound like AirPods, and they’re tuned to work equally well for music, watching videos, podcasts, games, and so on.
Music can be said to be the universal language: while our tastes in tunes may differ, there are few people who don’t have their own favorite songs to listen to. New technologies have increased the quality of that music — however, we can’t all afford the types of speakers and headphones that offer the most superior sound.
This spaciousness lends well to audio quality, which is dynamic and full-bodied. Some people will like that they won’t have to worry about missing travel announcements or someone trying to speak to them nearby, but I’m more of a tune-out-everything-else person when I listen to music. Music is full-bodied regardless of whether you’re playing a pop-filled running playlist or something quieter. I think the Powerbeats Pro also best these in overall audio quality, but their open design isn’t for everyone — especially if you want noise cancellation. You can use either earbud individually for audio or making calls.

USB-C, USB-A, audio jack on the left. Gen 1 Type-A, and a 3.5mm combination audio jack. My one disappointment was audio. The Chromebook delivered decent volume — certainly enough to fill a room — but percussion was tinny as I listened to music, and you can forget about bass entirely. It’s also quite portable at 2.65
One thing that did surprise me was the audio. My music sounded like it was coming from all around the room, the percussion really hit, and the bass was even present (which is rare for laptop speakers). You’ll get a slightly brighter screen, better audio, and a handy numpad, too. Photography by Monica Chin / The Verge.
Except for the dials along the perimeter, the entire surface area of either ear cup can be tapped to pause or play music, skip tracks, and answer calls. But if you’re super particular about balancing your music with the outside world, there’s no getting more granular than this. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge.

They reliably resumed the music whenever I put them back in my ears. Usually, there’s one genre or even a style of music production that will expose the weaknesses of a particular set of earbuds, but I struggled to find that with the ComfoBuds Pro. But it’s also designed to slot into Sonos’ multiroom audio platform and showcase the versatility that comes with it. But this is not a cylinder-style speaker that shoots audio in all directions. The Roam seems to make a priority of ensuring that the texture and vibrancy of music comes through with maximum clarity.
The Powerbeats Pro, Powerbeats, and even the $50 Beats Flex neckband earbuds all have one of Apple’s branded chips inside — either the H1 or W1 — for features like instant setup, automatic pairing across all Apple devices that are signed in to your iCloud account, and audio sharing. Audio sharing is nowhere to be found.
Razer’s second set of true wireless earbuds nail fit and audio but fall flat elsewhere Razer’s Hammerhead True Wireless Pro earbuds are a major improvement over the company’s first pair of true wireless earbuds. In Apple’s case, that’s Spatial Audio. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge.
All of these headphones now do a tremendous job of quieting your surroundings and putting you in a private bubble with your music, podcasts, movies, or whatever else you’re using them for. There’s still the Bose-standard 2.5mm audio jack for wired listening with the included 2.5-to-3.5mm to-3.5mm cable.
There’s no way to pause music with the earbuds right now; all you can do is double-tap to skip to the next song or hold down for three seconds to switch between synced devices. Unfortunately, you can’t use either of the earbuds standalone for audio or making calls, and they can only pair to one device at a time.
And once we all return to offices, you’ll have to ignore nearby conversations cutting into your music. The audio is about as full as it can be considering all the air these buds let in, but the Surface Earbuds don’t match the detail and richness of pricier earbuds. The Surface Audio app lets you customize the EQ for the earbuds.
Sony has also stuffed this soundbar with practically every way to stream music you could possibly want. There’s a USB port if you want to plug in a drive that contains your FLAC collection or whatever local audio you feel like playing. When the soundbar is outputting TV audio, you’ll see those details on the tiny front display.
Artist Jennifer Idrizi has said that it’s inspired by the “structure” of music — the fade in and fade out. There’s enough bass to give music the oomph it needs, but your walls aren’t going to be rattling at normal volume levels. Tap a button, and the three devices are grouped together for both TV audio and music.
Whether you're a professional or just picked it up as a hobby, photography nerds know that the Sony a7R II is an incredible piece of equipment. You can be listening to music from your laptop and take an incoming call on your phone without having to manually switch the earbuds over. Game audio was fine with a decent surround quality — but not the best I’ve ever heard and not as good as you’d get from a decent external speaker.
