Bookshare.org.in (India) My South Asian trip is mainly exploratory, with one notable exception. Bookshare.org is going international, and India is one of our focus countries for this expansion. My first visit after the India Economic Summit was to National Association for the Blind (India) to see Dipendra Manocha.

A specific “WhatsApp Pay” feature is set to be introduced in India (home of 400 million WhatsApp users) this month, but Facebook has not yet announced where else that feature might be rolled out.

This is why the making of accessible books is a classic example of market failure: if publishers could make a lot of money selling braille, large print, audio, and fully accessible textbooks, we wouldn’t need a copyright exception. It’s expensive to adapt textbooks to be accessible.

Soon afterwards in 2007, we won our first major award from the United States Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), which, in turn, allowed us to build Bookshare into a national asset. We first extended Bookshare services internationally in 2008 with the launch of Bookshare in India.

First, it makes creating a national domestic copyright exception an obligation of countries that ratify the Treaty. So, this means books, periodicals and other similar textual works, including audio versions of those titles. It covers music in the form of sheet music, but not audio or videos of performances. Article 2(c).

The nexus for this work is the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the United Nations agency that deals with such matters. I’ve been to national meetings in the U.S. The context We’ve been supporting the World Blind Union and other groups in the pursuit of a Treaty for the Visually Impaired for the last five or six years.
