This exhibition represents a few big shifts for us: We used a more participatory design process. We had some money.

This week marks five years since the book The Participatory Museum was first released. I thought the pinnacle of participatory practice was an exhibit that could inspire collective visitor action without facilitation. Over the past four years, I''ve been running a small regional art and history museum in Santa Cruz, CA.

Then again, Saturday was hardly normal at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History. This past weekend, in conjunction with our exhibition about Ze Frank's current participatory project, A Show , we hosted " Ze Frank Weekend "--a quickie summer camp of workshops, activities, presentations, and lots of hugging.

It made me think in ways that I haven't before about the relation of art--as expressive culture--to democracy. It is multi-disciplinary, incorporates diverse voices from our community, and provides interactive and participatory opportunities for visitor involvement. At the tiny science center, I got to do everything from leading programs to building exhibits to managing volunteers to cleaning snot off of plexiglass. At the big one, I worked on a small project with teens to design science exhibits for community centers in their own neighborhoods.

The recent flurry of restrictions that has sent teens fleeing? I can just imagine the headline: CHILD MOLESTERS CALL ON ART, VICTIMS. Use staff and volunteers as monitors/encouragers/facilitators. How can going to an art museum be more like going to a convention for people who love art? The irritating design?

At the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History , we''re approaching this challenge through a different lens: social bridging. Visitors now spontaneously volunteer that "meeting new people" and "being part of a bigger community" are two of the things they love most about the museum experience. And rarely the twain shall meet.
