Women Who Light the Dark by photojournalist Paola Gianturco (powerHouse books, September 2007) begins with a profile of Betty Makoni and the Girl Child Network in Zimbabwe. Betty and 6 tenth grade students co-founded the Girl Child Network. Each new GCN member receives a journal for poetry, art and reflection.

These are grassroots organizations, and they were helping each other with the most intractable problems that face women everywhere: domestic violence, sex trafficking, disease, discrimination. And, of course, because women's organizations always have too little money, I thought maybe a book would inspire other people to help.
