I read recently about an awesome project at the San Jose Museum of Art in 2001, Collecting Our Thoughts, in which visitors were invited to write the labels for an art exhibition (more another time). But it's a lot of fun, and it could be a great way to construct a personalized takeaway from a museum experience.

I've been thinking recently about the "why" behind encouraging social interactions among strangers in museums. After all, people visit museums in their own pods for a reason. There are two ways I think we can be using this in museums. First, I think we should support the proliferation of museum-based "I saw you's."

We created and ran the web site for the Liberal Arts College in an atmosphere which, upon reflection is a lot like Linden Lab. When I graduated in 2003, I moved out here to California and worked with the San Jose Museum of Art before getting a job with Linden Labs. I learned a lot from San Jose Art Museum.

This year, the American Association of Museums annual conference was in Los Angeles (my hometown). I hosted two sessions, one on design for participation and the other on mission-driven museum technology development. He started with museums as a "place to go"--to see things, consume experiences. This week, thoughts on Chapter 12 of Elaine Gurian’s book Civilizing the Museum , "Threshold Fear: Architecture program planning."
