We were shocked when we saw the 25 winners of the big $100,000 to $500,000 Google Impact Challenge Awards. Google Global Impact Award competitions have been held in India and the UK, and most recently in the San Francisco Bay Area. The guiding principle of the awards is to “apply a Silicon Valley mindset to social innovation.

The educational goals for the funders in this list include increasing postsecondary and higher learning opportunities, advancing innovation inside the classroom, engaging more students in the arts, and enhancing early childhood development, just to name a few. This past spring, we launched a program with the Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP), an inspiring organization that has served San Francisco for 30 years using the pivotal moment of pregnancy and parenthood as an opportunity to partner with families and break the cycle of childhood poverty. In honour of Mandela Day, I had the pleasure to talk with Noëlla about her championing of Mandela’s vision for Africa and the award that she received from the House of Mandela. I had a tough childhood there, but I was able to go to school and worked hard for the education my mother had given me the opportunity to get.
