We've been offering a host of participatory and interactive experiences at the Museum of Art & History this season. I loved Jasper Visser's list of 30 "do's" for designing participatory projects earlier this month. Artists work incredibly hard to produce their work. Make sure staff/volunteers know where they are.

In 2008, the conversation started shifting to "how" and "what."

It happened because we: partnered with local artists and community organizations whose passion and generosity made it possible for us to create incredible events. Over 800 people volunteered their talents to support our programs, with the majority collaborating on our monthly themed 3rd Friday events.

Ideas include combining Santa Cruz's famous love of yoga with life-drawing classes, having models incorporate yoga poses for the sake of the would-be artists. I want to make this happen.'"

In some ways, we do a good job engaging people who reflect our whole County. If we want to reflect the identities of our community, we’ve got to focus on changing that. For example, in Santa Cruz there is a huge community of creative people who identify as artists in non-traditional media. Showing that their voice matters.

It’s not unusual for us to meet with an environmental activist, a balloon artist, a farmer, and the Mayor of Santa Cruz all in one day. When planning programs or events, we involve a combination of these groups to share and bridge audiences, bringing big, diverse crowds to new artists and ideas. Large and small (or no) followings.
