Last month, artist and game designer Nikki Pugh led an utterly charming, often hilarious community residency at the City Gallery in Leicester, UK. There was a large mind map on the wall with a prompt in the middle encouraging visitors to imagine a slightly distant future with no staff present to enforce the rules in galleries or museums.

On June 4, we opened The Tech Virtual Test Zone , a new 2000 sq ft gallery at The Tech Museum of Innovation featuring exhibits on the theme of art, film, and music that were originally developed in Second Life by a community of creative amateurs. Some museum pros have been puzzled by this.

This might make Advice sound more like an educational program than an exhibit, or like a failure on the unfacilitated front. They reminded me of street vendors or great science museum cart educators, imparting an energy to the space without overwhelming it. This is a good lesson for museum talk-back design.

No, these are neither the words of a self-important curator nor a well-spoken museum director. the crowd-curated photo exhibition now open at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. It is a substantive research contribution by the museum to the social technology field at large. Things like this are far and few between.

Advertisements for the skull blanketed Amsterdam, and other museums even tried to get in on the buzz generated by its presentation. By positioning the feedback stations outside the flow of the museum (and within a solely skull-branded structure), the resultant videos were more topical and focused than museum standard.
