Public libraries are some of our favorites. They’re so much more than book museums. If you haven’t been to your library lately, check it out! We recently spoke with Joyce Fehl of the Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick, Maine. It should be noted that Curtis is not a public municipal library in the traditional sense.

North Carolina Museum of History 1988.39.4 I’m always amazed when my colleagues tell me that the biggest barrier they face to “opening up” the content at their museums is from registrars—the people who care for collection objects. Followers of Museum 2.0 To me, this seems both discouraging and ungenerous to visitors.

Me with a friend As I keep saying, I’ve been to a few museums of late. In reflecting on the sample, I’ve made some broad reflections on museum workers and visitors. In this field, we are definitely low on praise and even lower on profit. Our visitors often see museums as a genre, not unlike hospitals or libraries.

From a museum perspective, I think there's a lot to learn from these venues' business models, approach to collecting and exhibiting work, and connection with their audiences. Machine Project is a non-profit storefront arts venue that hosts a dizzying array of eclectic classes, workshops, events, and occasional exhibits.
