From a museum perspective, I think there's a lot to learn from these venues' business models, approach to collecting and exhibiting work, and connection with their audiences. There's the barrier of artistic quality--funders, trustees, or staff members who argue that work by non-canonical artists is not up to the standards of the institution. Reading the report, I kept thinking of Rick Lowe, the artist and community activist behind Project Row Houses in Houston.

Every other year, they convene TUPAC, a group of 35 outside advisors, including teens, college students, Temple University professors, artists, philanthropists, and community leaders. The chairs were cast-off art, reclaimed as art, available for people to take off the hooks and use.

Finally, many art museums do fabulous, highly participatory projects that are led by participatory artists who work specifically in the realm of dialogue or active social participation. Ironically, art museums often present the most radical participatory experiences for visitors--but only when led by an artist, not by internal staff members.

Their use of the web to connect independent artists all over the world was striking and very surprising.

I had a healthy second life as a slam poet, and I loved the world of artists and performance. There's not a lot of work in pinball, and I had a deep secondary interest in unschooling and free-choice learning. I also learned that the best money in museums for someone who's starting out is in art modeling.

We''ve seen surprising and powerful results--visitors from different backgrounds getting to know each other, homeless people and museum volunteers working together, artists from different worlds building new collaborative projects. Programs that emphasize bringing diverse people together are more popular than those that serve intact groups.

We experimented with many different forms of visitor participation throughout the building, trying to balance social and individual, text-based and artistic, cerebral and silly. It's not unusual to find a teenager at the typewriter for an hour or a family learning how to use it together. We spent a long time prototyping this one.
