It's my second week as the Executive Director at The Museum of Art & History in Santa Cruz, CA, and boy is my everything tired. And if this sounds too big, we have lots of more specific technology projects (point of sale, interactive staircase) you could get involved with. It could be a tag-team art/history lecture series.

Community programs interns work with artists and historians, families and adults, to make everything from mini-participatory exhibitions to full-blown concert series. Sounds good?

It is what it sounds like: a book of original sheet music, beautifully designed and complemented with artwork and text. There are many artistic projects that offer a template for participation, whether a printed play, an orchestral score, or a visual artwork that involves an instructional set (from community murals to Sol LeWitt).

In this case, I find the most interesting ones to be made by artists. Sound is often a good surprise in spaces. The Hampton Court Palace also in London did a good job in their spaces to have ambient sound that evokes the past of their spaces. The American Museum of Natural History had two wonderful moments happening this summer.

We've been trying to actively combat this at The Museum of Art & History (MAH) in Santa Cruz. We're showing an installation by artist Shelby Graham which features beautiful photographs of butterflies juxtaposed with images of the bombing of Japan in World War II. Welcome to Pine Point is a kind of virtual museum exhibition about the town, told from the perspective of Michael Simons, an artist who grew up in the nearby town of Yellowknife and visited Pine Point as a boy. It is, in short, the best multimedia history project I've ever seen, and I wish more museums were pursuing projects like it.
