Seeing so many cheerful one-liners in my inbox made me think about how different my work situation is today than the last time I reflected on it in public in 2012, at my one-year anniversary.

In some ways, we do a good job engaging people who reflect our whole County. If we want to reflect the identities of our community, we’ve got to focus on changing that. For example, in Santa Cruz there is a huge community of creative people who identify as artists in non-traditional media. Showing that their voice matters.

Last month, I met an artist who was part of a group that created a renegade podcast tour for the Portland Art Museum. The introductory label talks about "strangeness, mystery, and oddity" and comments that, "when things are strange, the brain sends out feelers for meaning." I enjoyed listening to it (virtually, not at the museum).

I had a healthy second life as a slam poet, and I loved the world of artists and performance. I started meeting people through the blog--both those I interviewed and early readers who commented. I met lovely people in engineering, but I found the work to be too detail-oriented and microscopic in scope to satisfy me.

The World Beach Project is managed by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London with artist-in-residence Sue Lawty. Visitors to the website can't even comment on the photos or mark them as favorites. Many museums do not provide participants with clear terms surrounding their submissions, and for savvy people (especially artists!)
