At the time, I was a program director for an arts education program and a facilitator of career counseling workshops for artists. Although our world still has tremendous challenges, I think more people, especially young people, realize the importance of being engaged in their communities on a local, national or global level.

I started contributing to Global Voices where I did blogging roundups from Cambodia. In 2007, I raised money to help sponsor the first Cambodian Bloggers conference and raised a lot of the money via Twitter as Shel Israel noted in his book, Twitterville. Does anyone in the room identify as an artist, by any chance? I just want to dispel the myth that we are not activists and that we are not artists. When Sophia contacted me and asked if I would talk here, my first thought was, "You know, I could talk here, but I just know so many amazing women who have stories that I want to share."
