Curtis was Joyce’s local library when she moved to Maine, and she has been in her position for the past ten years. . The land and funding came from William Curtis, the son of a local ship captain, who turned down money from Carnegie to build his community’s library himself. It started with one lighted sign in Portland, Maine.

After the workshop was over, my hosts took on a tour of Free Geek, a truly unique nonprofit organization in Portland. The space reminded of the many artist-run spaces and community centers I've visited when I worked with the New York Foundation of the Arts. These unused computers can't be recycled at our local dump.

Boulder Food Rescue works with local businesses to collect surplus food that would usually be thrown away and distribute that food to people who need it. Cary Creative Center in North Carolina is an upcycling nonprofit that provides used artistic materials to people. As a reuse organization, its motto is "make art, not waste."
