Public Allies Arizona ’s 13th class will graduate in June, the completion of a 10-month AmeriCorps program that places emerging young leaders at local nonprofits for full-time paid apprenticeships. What drew me to Public Allies were many things, one being that I’ve had the opportunity to meet alums who spoke highly of Public Allies Arizona.

When I think back on my time with ASU Lodestar Center's Public Allies Arizona program, many different memories and candid moments pop into my mind. This year alone, Joseph Perez created an entire collaborative program that uses hip hop to teach students about life.

Swift Youth Foundation is an organization that focuses on supporting the social and emotional development of youth and enhances social awareness and leadership skills for teens through mentor relationships. These students come from low socioeconomic communities and are not expected to achieve much, however neither was I.

I’ve become an unofficial mentor and tutor for these young students who are eager to learn and become leaders themselves. Public Allies Arizona is a 10-month apprenticeship program designed to develop the next generation of civic leaders. I feel so grateful to be in their lives, to walk beside them in the journey that is ahead.
