Candid and ABFE partnered to create and publish Philanthropy and HBCUs: Foundation funding to historically Black colleges and universities. By comparison, funding to HBCUs averaged $61 million from 2015 through 2019.

In comparison, our Foundation 1000 data set is limited to grants of $10,000 or more awarded by a set of 1,000 of the largest U.S. The value of known transactions may not always equal reported total giving. These facets are captured in Candid’s Philanthropy Classification System. What is the Foundation 1000? Pledges are excluded.

The other categories were high net worth individuals (-15%) nonprofits (-2%) and corporate philanthropy (-2%). In comparison, 40% said large businesses were more likely to make things worse, 59% said the federal government would make things worse and 60% indicated the media would make things worse.

Just over half (53%) of all surveyed foundations increased their giving in FYE 2021 compared to FYE 2020, and about a quarter (28%) reported declines in giving.
