My first ladder of engagement was developed for the America’s Giving Challenge contest that I won in 2008 - it was a framework that used the “community manager” or “network weaver” as the human face to connect with people and bring them to the next level of involvement. ServiceNation , a national campaign to increase service opportunities and elevate the importance of service in America, has received a $500,000 grant from Facebook as part of its expanded partnership. Along with 3 colleagues, we volunteered to develop an entry for the Apps for America 2 contest , sponsored by the Sunlight Foundation. Over 1,500 mashups later, and a first prize win in the contest, DataMasher is proving to be a great experiment in data transparency. Because data is powerful!

But the denominations of the donations remain small, and it's not clear that one-off contests will lead to more. But, it not necessarily anything new.

My thought was to blog about the cause (a stretch), but to share as much learning about personal/social fundraising or what I'm learning about social networks - that should be of interest some readers - and even those I'm competing with for the contest.
Here some thoughts from the NTEN blog about ways to use twitter for your organization, although some nonprofit technology experts do not find twitter useful professionally. Experiment with online contests, both creating them and participating in them. Online contests like the Knight News Challenge , The Case Foundation's America's Giving Challenge , and the AmEx Cardmember Project can be resource draining to participate in, especially for a time- and cash-strapped nonprofit.
